It claims to have finished the trip with 85 miles of range left in reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the route between the two cities would typically measure around 630 miles in length, the engineers plotted an alternate course accounting for the landscape and traffic conditions, while avoiding ferry crossings. That extended the drive by more than 100 miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The car\u2019s solid-state battery uses cells from US firm Factorial Energy while the pack was designed in collaboration with Mercedes\u2019 F1 base in Brixworth, Northamptonshire. Its weight and footprint are said to be \u201ccomparable\u201d to a standard EQS\u2019s lithium-ion pack \u2013 which yields up to 481 miles of range \u2013 but its energy capacity is said to be improved by 25%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The battery pack uses a floating cell case with pneumatic actuators that help to manage the expansion and contraction of the cells in operation, to improve their stability and longevity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercedes had previously expected the new pack to improve the car\u2019s range to around 620 miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief technology officer Markus Sch\u00e4fer hailed the technology as a \u201cgamechanger\u201d, saying the successful test drive shows how it can deliver \u201ca new level of range and comfort\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sch\u00e4fer added that Mercedes is aiming to bring solid-state batteries \u2013 which have long been considered a major breakthrough for electric cars, but which have faced decades of delays \u2013 to market this decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That matches the timeline quoted by the rival Volkswagen Group, which has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-news\/technology\/vw-group-aims-road-ready-solid-state-battery-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unveiled its solid-state prototype<\/a>&nbsp;at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-news\/motor-shows-munich-motor-show\/munich-motor-show-2025-all-best-new-cars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Munich motor show<\/a>.
